NIGERIA

About eNGO Programme (International) – Nigeria: According to Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) there areamitabh-sahgal-at-nigeria currently over 45,000 NGOs in Nigeria, out of which a majority of them do not haveAmitabh Sahgal at Nigeria a proper webpage. Most of these NGOs have limited or no access to ICT tools. These NGOs working at the grassroots remain unknown and do not get the advantage and appreciation, which come from Government bodies to such organizations. This situation might be a result of lack of finance, expertise and foresight. Besides, all such NGOs have a lot of information that is limited to their geographical area, policy makers, or potential granters. Digital Empowerment Foundation, India and Mr. Amos Emmanuel while attending the 2013 UN World Summit Award Global Congress in Colombo, Sri Lanka discussed the need & possibilities of an eNGO Workshop for Nigerian grassroots NGOs in ICT capacity building along with free Website & training facility. President, Programos Foundation, Nigeria and the Eminent National Expert of the UN World Summit Award Nigeria Mr. Amos Emmanuel, have taken the initiative to organize the local NGOs through online engagements. They have also made efforts and partnered with the International Association of African Non-Governmental Organizations (IAAN) to co-ordinate the maiden eNGO International Workshop in on 11th march, 2014 with 106 NGOs in, Lagos, Nigeria.

Recommendation

ENGO programme is such a wonderful and unique Information and Communication Technology programme that will lead to enhanced acceleration of development in the communities. It is a timely and therefore all the NGOs in Mpumalanga province and its environs should take this opportunity to be digitally empowered. The workshop was good, interactive, the content was relevant and the presenter thorough, however the participants’ recommended that the number of days of the workshop should be extended to two or three so that the participants get time to interact with facilitators more and more, this would give them more insight on the ENGO programme as well as the .NGO Domain.

Discussion & Observation

The workshop was well received with by the locals with the turn up being a total of eighty NGOs. Six government officials were in attendance. They supported the digital literacy idea. The attending NGOs had different thematic areas with one being a media house, thirty being in agriculture and agri business, twenty being faith based organizations, ten were orphanages and the rest were in welfare and micro credit/table banking or merry go round. The participants appreciated the launch of ENGO programme in South Africa and forty registered. The rest who did not register promised to register through the local partner reason being time, the workshop ended late some of the NGOs could not wait since they were going far. Information on the .NGO domain was very new to the participants and after the presentation all the participants appreciated that it was important, sixty five were ready for the .NGO domain, and the rest indicated that they would sign for .NGO domain through the local partner.

Local Partners

The group was formed out of the idea that many youths with resourceful and brilliant brains lost direction and got wasted due to lack of motivation and advice. It was observed that this situation made many youths to indulge in immoral and ill behaviors such as prostitution, theft, burglary, robbery, thuggery, drug abuse, alcoholism and corruption. This resulted to insecurity, poverty, illiteracy and underdevelopment in the society. Youths were displayed has tools of political violence, and servants if social evil in the society. Brains vision youths network thus sought to bring youths together in order to network on ways in which they can improve their livelihood thus escaping the rot in the society. It came as a transformational tool that aims to convert the wasted life of youths into the resourceful life.movement……Read More

The hands-on Website Designing Training Session

The hands on website training session was well articulated and enjoyable, it was exclusive yet equipping.

Do you think this training will help you to manage your website independently?

The participants submitted that, even though the training gave them a head start and idea on how to update their websites independently it was their desire to have more trainings on this.

What do you think, how will .NGO domain name help you in strengthening your NGO?

First and foremost the .NGO name is a very new and unique consent and it is our first time hearing about it. From the presentation we believe the .NGO name will help us improve the organization. We believe that the .NGO will enhance the following aspects of our NGOs: visibility, exclusivity, increased access to charities and donors, endless opportunities and continuous networking due to enhance accessibilities.

Connecting Digitally: eNGO Workshop now in Pakistan

With the advent of new technology, there is a need to empower NGOs with the latest tools to help them scale up for better outcome. There is no second view on why and how Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools, platforms and devices led by web platform can bring positive transformation in processes, mechanism and delivery capacities of NGOs in contemporary times. With increase in scope of NGOs in Pakistan to intervene and undertake social and developmental responsibilities, there emerges a challenge for NGOs to escalate and develop their institutional capacities for good results. NGOs are increasingly seen as pro-active and front face of citizen service deliveries and community empowerment, in rural/countryside in Pakistan.

On 12th May 2014 Digital Empowerment Foundation organized an eNGO workshop in partnership with Public Interest Registry in Islamabad, Pakistan. Located in South of Asia, Pakistan’s economy is the 26th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), and 44th largest in terms of nominal GDP.

Around 70 NGOs participated in this workshop. The country partner for this event was Bytes for All. It is a human rights organization and a research think tank with a focus on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). It experiments with and organizes debates on the relevance of ICTs for sustainable development and strengthening human rights movements in the country.

The collective efforts of PIR and DEF, since 2010, have brought good results in the eNGO Network and Challenge programme. The vision of the eNGO is to see that all grassroots organisations are ICT enabled and in turn transform into changing agents of societies and communities they serve. At a wider policy and programme level it is desired that governments and authorities realize the necessity to empower NGOs and other community based organisations with technology skills to serve national development goals and objectives by supplementing and complimenting the role of governments.

p1-300x202Bytes for All (B4A), Pakistan is a human rights organization and a research think tank with a focus on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). It experiments with and organizes debate on the relevance of ICTs for sustainable development and strengthening human rights movements in the country. Its strategic plan delivers in four key result areas (KRA), which include:

  1. Freedom of expression for civil liberties & securing digital rights;
  2. Strengthening digital security of human rights defenders & media professionals;
  3. Ending technology-driven gender-based violence; and
  4. Network building at national, regional and global level.

To deliver above-mentioned KRAs, B4A conducts research for evidence-based policy advocacy and capacity building of human rights defenders on their digital security, online safety & privacy.

Background
The eNGO summit is a joint effort of Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and Public Interest Registry (PIR) to help small local organizations grow with the help of ICT tools.Bytes for All, Pakistan in collaboration with DEF and PIR organized a one day event on May 12, 2014 at Hillview Hotel, Islamabad. The aim of conducting the event was to bring this initiative to Pakistan to help in strengthening local NGOs/Self Help Groups by creating a virtual identity and increasing their visibility for national and global outreach. The eNGO summit offered range of services that were meant to enhance the capabilities and knowledge of member organizations to strengthen their overall efficiency and effectiveness. eNGO summit provided opportunity to grass root level organizations to have a virtual identity and information and communication platform for outreach.Summit was meant to provide a common space to these local organizations where they can showcase their activities, share their experiences and challenges and extend their outreach with like minded NGOs, national and international agencies. Most importantly, the eNGO summit provided capacity-building and knowledge support to its members on using ICT and digital media tools for overall organizational development benefiting the societies in larger extent. Objectives:The basic aim of eNGO summit was:

  • To equip organizations with web enabled platform which will provide them a free website, domain name and capacity building.
  • To promote and encourage best ICT practices by NGOs for community development.
  • To create a network of NGOs into innovative ICT practices for learning, experience sharing, enhance their daily activities and maximize the outreach.
Process

The process of organizing eNGO summit in Islamabad was handled with great care and in a professionalp3-300x201 manner. Bytes for All, Pakistan set the application process open for organizations. Lots of applications were received from all over the country. Invitations were also sent to organizations which cater grass root level organizations to extend the sphere of network. Profiles of participants were thoroughly examined to select the best possible organization for the summit.

After the selection of participants, each and every successful participant was contacted through email and telephone to confirm their selection. A mailing list was prepared under name of engo14@bytesforall.pk and all the selected participants were added with their prior permission. The purpose of the mailing list was to give the participants a common space where they can communicate, exchange introductions and to get updates related to event. All the relevant information about the logistics and event were also shared on the mailing list.

Participants

People all over Pakistan, from Khyber to Sindh to tribal areas participated in the summit. Two female participants traveled for 27 hours all the way from interior Sindh to attend eNGO summit. We got participants from FATA region, the most troubled area of the country. Despite the curfew in tribal areas the enthusiasm of participants to attend the event could not stop. Many participants from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also attended the event.

One thing is also pertinent to mention here that there was a massive political rally against the government due to which roads were blocked, people were barred to enter federal capital but the political unrest in Islamabad couldn’t lessen the passion of people and many participants travelled all the way long to attend the event.

Delivery Mechanism

The one day event comprised of awareness and training sessions highlighting the need for having an online presence for wider outreach. More than 70 organizations and social rights activist from all over the country including conflict hit areas participated in the event. The event opened up with the introduction of organizations and their ongoing work and then participants were given insight on the eNGO program.

Our lead trainer, Abdul Salam who is a software engineer by profession and working with Bytes for All, Pakistan as an ICT Manager opened up session on building a web platform. He asked participants about their expectation and what they expect to learn. It was found that few of the participants were aware of wordpress and drupal etc but don’t know how to upload content on their own.

Salam exposed them to the utilization of the web portal and how to use Content Management System (CMS) on their own. He highlighted the importance of available ICT tools for their own community networks building.

In his session, he told them about website, what is website and basic purpose of using a website? Seeing the interest of participants he briefed them about domain, hosting, security and how to utilize and interlink them.

The session included following topics:

  • Why web platform?
  • What is website? (blog/website) (static website & dynamic website) web application?
  • Types of websites
  • Tools that are used?
  • How website work?
  • How can I create my own website?
  • How to get a domain name?
  • What is WordPress?
  • Ways to make your website online ?

Participants were very eager to learn about all basic information about web/domain/hosting and web development tools. Here is when the hands-on exercise started. Salam gradually took participants from basic to advance level of web development.

p-7

Participants were also given manual with instruction on building a web platform.

Participants were trained to use:

  • Cpanel use
  • WordPress installation on web server
  • Creating a website (steps for using WordPress)
  • Social media interaction with web platforms
  • Backup of web platform
  • Security of web platform
  • Tips and technique

The basic purpose of this exercise was to:

  • To train participants about web development tools techniques and their practical use.
  • To train participant on web development tools how to customize platforms, to disseminate information to the masses.
  • To enable participants to maintain and develop their own websites.

The exercise was then followed by question and answer session to demystify the technology barrier and make the participants comfortable with ICTs.

Feedback

The initiative was highly appreciated by the representatives of small organizations who attended the event. Facilitators managed to deliver the session in a friendly manner and made it easy to comprehend for those who were not quite familiar with ICT tools and web development.

Participants really liked the sessions and were excited to have learnt processes through which they will be able to have a website of their own. Moreover learning about different dimensions of social media and how they can use for advocacy was helpful for them.

Few participants who already had websites and knew WordPress said that this summit has polished their concepts and enhanced their capabilities to use these tools more effectively to obtain long term goals.

“The problem which we have been facing while operating social media and website has been solved today by this workshop, I am glad to be part of such a learning event,” said Muhammad Wali, a participant from Islamabad.

Muhammad Latif another participant added, “The best part of this event is the practical exercises, the trainer was guiding us throughout which was really helpful.”

Most of the participants complained about the limited time.

“These trainings should be for two to three days as it has so many technical aspects in it” added one of the participants from FATA region.

“My expectations from the event was to be able to manage website on my own and after today’s session, I believe I can do it to some extend but we should be given more time to be able to handle every aspect of it”, Abdul Hadi added.

Overall, participants thoroughly learnt a lot in the event, they got their selves introduce to new tools such as web portals and blog spaces. They were determined to continue this practice in future and showed keen interest to organize such sessions in their areas so people could learn these useful tools to meet new challenges with proper visibility on internet sphere.

read-bhutan1In developing South Asia, Bhutan is often seen as an anomaly: as a country that measures success in terms of Gross National Happiness, it is often overlooked by NGOs. Yet poor educational attainment, access to resources and a lack of opportunity are still very real issues here. Bhutan has one of the lowest literacy rates in Asia – 41% of adults can’t read – and before READ established its first community library and resource center there, Bhutan had only one public lending library in the entire country.1 With two thirds of the population living in rural areas with rugged terrain and a poor infrastructure, access to resources and information is very limited……Read more

eNGO-DOTNGO Summit in Kenya

engo-workshop-east-africa-960

eNGO is an international flagship programme of Digital Empowerment Foundation, for the digital empowerment of grassroots NGOs. The eNGO programme strives to empower NGOs and self-help groups in India, South Asia and African Countries. The Africa chapter of ENGO program came into existence in October of 2012 when the program was launched in Kenya, more than 200 grass root development organizations have since joined the eNGO network and are learnt to be beneficiaries.

There are currently more than 1 million NGOs / CBOs and Self Help Groups in East Africa region and the majority of them do not have internet exposure to connect with the World Wide Web. Most of the NGOs working at the grassroots level thus remain unknown and do not earn the appreciation and benefit coming from sources that can provide tremendous energy to them. This anonymity might have been caused for reasons like lack of finance, expertise and affordable technology in the region.

At the first eNGO International Programme Launch in Kenya, DEF with the support of PIR enabled more than 150 NGOs with ICT and Web presence in .ORG domain. With PIR partnership for .NGO initiative, DEF has furthered the eNGO beyond Kenya to other African countries.  The 2nd eNGO-DOTNGO Summit is focused on Digital Development of nonprofits with .NGO Domain & Web presence across Africa as how ICTs have empowered them to be efficient, transparent and beneficial to their communities by using affordable web technology of eNGO Network of DEF.

This year 2014 DEF and PIR together with the Africa partner BVYN organized and conducted the largest NGO gathering where 279 organizations out of the 310 that registered for the workshop attended from all 4 countries. All the participating organizations signed expression of interest for the .NGO domain and joined the ENGO network.

At the stroke of midnight, on 15th August 1947 India awoke to freedom. The cost of this freedom was phenomenal in terms of loss of property and human lives as a consequence of partition. The exchange of population across borders forced millions to live in alien surroundings and subhuman conditions. In this hour of agony and grief, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru requested his very close friend Bishop Picket to initiate a response from the Indian Protestant and Orthodox Churches. On his request, the National Council of Churches in India responded by forming the ‘NCC Relief Committee’ for immediate response as an expression of solidarity with the suffering masses, which later went on to become the Church’s…..read more

NEW DELHI

.NGO launch at Delhi

The 6th edition of the mBillionth Awards marked an important day for both the grassroots NGOs and the digital community. At a time when there is growing distrust of NGOs across the country, the need for a validated and verified identity has become all the more pertinent for non-profits. July 23, 2015, marked an exciting time in the history of Internet because for the first time, ever since the launch of .ORG about 30 years year, Public Interest Registry (operator of the .ORG domain) introduced .NGO — a new top-level domain. In fact, it is not just a domain but a platform for NGOs to earn the reputation of a validated organisation, get visibility in the crowded digital world, ensure fundraising, call for partnerships and build their network. Thus, taking forward the central government’s Digital India vision, Digital Empowerment Foundation officially launch the .NGO domain, exclusively for non-government organisations in India, to ensure they have a unique digital identity in the ever-growing world of Internet space. Mr. Amitabh Singhal, Board member of PIR.org, introduced the audience to the .NGO Domain, which is a closed domain and cannot be bought until the NGO is verified and validated. The .NGO domain was officially launched in India on July 23, 2015, at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi by Digital Empowerment Foundation Founder-Director Osama Manzar in the presence of an esteemed panel that included HelpAge India CEO Mr. Mathew Cherian, Director General of IIMC SunitTandon, Convenor and Chief Program Executive (CSR) at Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs GayatriSubramaniam, GuideStar India CEO PushpaAman Singh, Lead of Corporate Affairs/ CSR at Microsoft India ManjuDhasmana and Co-founder of Head Held High MadanPadki.

Event Gallery

The session kicked off with MrCherian introducing the start of non-government organisations, and addressed the issue of credibility and trust deficit, especially in the present scenario, while highlighting the importance of transparency. “Do committee meetings, announce accounts there, pin them on a notice board or upload five-year accounts on the website,” he suggested. Mr. Tandon congratulated each and every NGO for contributing to the development sector in some way or the other but agreed that NGOs need to get out of the vicious circle of insults and “come out clean”. This, he said, can only be achieved through ways and means of transparency and NGO validation. “Right to Information is often talked of in the NGO sector. To waive off dishonesty, internet connectivity is important,” Mr. Tandon said. GayatriSubramaniam remembered the days where NGO were grant based. But today, like never before, 16,000 companies are discussing CSR in their board rooms. “With the increased number of opportunities, NGOs will have to understand how the corporate world functions, how their lifecycle works and the need to do regular monitoring. Most NGOs are not aware of these aspects, thus they lose a lot of opportunities,” she pointed out. Meanwhile, PushpaAman Singh introduced the audience to the concept of GuideStar. Guidestar is a platform that connects NGOs to the right set of donors and institutions. “Saying the right thing at the right time on the web portal is necessary. Stories do play an important role but donors always look for hard facts i.e finances and income tax returns. So understand that the donor is important, and carefully accept money from reliable sources,” she adviced, adding that the Internet is a powerful tool not just for showcasing but also enabling validations, verifications and online transactions. ManjuDhasmana is the Lead-Corporate Affairs/CSR at Microsoft India that has been working towards creating opportunities for the youth in India through several skill-based programmes. “Online visibility and engagement is important today. Even donors look up for activities on the Internet. At the same time, relationship of non-profits and corporates is very deep and tightly woven. Thus, creating an impact is very important as the credibility of the Lead in the corporate sector depends on the success of the programme” she stated Mr. Padki made an interesting point at the event. He said there is nothing called a “social enterprise”. Either there is an enterprise or an anti-social enterprise. Each enterprise has to be social and each NGO has to be an enterprise, he added. Following an interesting panel discussion, which focused on the importance of online presence and ensuring credibility of NGOs in India, 13 early adopters of .NGO domain were awarded with mementos and selfie sticks. “Take selfies, selflessly,” quipped Mr. Manzar as he closed the first session to set the stage for the second session on the concept of crowd funding.
